Warehouse retail giant, Costco, is the topic of news yet again as a worker strike looms ahead. Tensions are running high within the company as workers are prepared to walk off the job amidst contract negotiations. The possibility of a strike has become very real after a union backing thousands of workers has voted to authorize it.

Let’s break-down the situation as it stands

Over 18,000 Costco workers nationwide, who are represented by worker union, Teamsters, have spent the last few months in contract negotiations. The current contract expires soon, on Jan 31 and if a resolution is not reached by then, workers are resolute to walk off the job and strike. This move is backed by Teamsters members, with 85% of members voting in favor of a strike if an agreement that is deemed fair by them is not drafted.

If negotiations are not successful, workers will begin a strike demanding improved benefits and higher wages. The demands stem with the justification of Costco’s record profits as of late. Sean M. O’Brien, general president of Teamsters, has affirmed, “Our members have spoken loud and clear — Costco must deliver a fair contract, or they’ll be held accountable.” O’Brien also added that, “From day one, we’ve told Costco that our members won’t work a day past January 31 without a historic, industry-leading agreement.”

To strike, or not to strike?

Much like the employees of every previous worker strike, Costco employees too are asking for better working conditions, benefits, and wages. Teamsters members are firm on their demands and have argued that Costco’s refusal to meet this simple demands is unacceptable citing the company’s colossal financial success in the last fiscal year. $254 billion in revenue and $7.5 billion in revenue was recently reported for the company’s 2024 fiscal year, ending Sept 1.

Costco employs approximately 30, 000 employees across the United States. Despite bringing in revenue in the billions, the warehouse chain remains reluctant to meet the demands of its employees thereby compelling employees to take this drastic step.

Bryan Fields, a Costco employee from Baltimore said, “We are the backbone of Costco, we drive its success and generate its profits. If the company doesn’t step up, the responsibility falls on them. They’ll be striking themselves”, as part of a Teamsters statement.

Teamsters has been prepping workers for the possible strike by holding practice pickets across the country. Recently, demonstrations have been held California, Washington, Long Island, and Southern California.

What is Costco’s take?

No company would openly admit to wrong-doing and Costco claims that it treats its employees better than other competitors in an attempt to defend themselves. Teamsters is of the opinion that company actions do not match up with this reputation. Director of Teamsters Warehouse Division, Tom Erickson says, “This strike vote is a direct response to Costco’s greed and blatant disregard for the bargaining process”.

Tensions are aplenty at the company as a proposal to cut the company’s DEI policy was submitted and the vote for this decision will be held on Jan 23 due to pressure from the conservative think tank. They are of the thinking that this policy will be a risk and is discriminatory as it raises concerns about hiring practices based on race and gender. The company’s board of directors is strongly opposed to this proposal and feel that the policy reiterates Costco’s values of inclusion and respect.

The company’s moves within the next few days will be critical if they want to avoid a strike. Pressure is growing and demands for better pay and working conditions are on the minds of employees of every retailer. During the holiday season, Amazon and Starbucks workers had also gone on strike for similar demands.
