During times of economic tension and ballooning inflation rates, one would presume that customers would flock to dollar stores in the hopes of stretching their budgets as far as they possibly can. This does not appear to be the case, however, and even dollar stores are recording a decline in sales during these tricky times.
Dollar Tree, everyone’s favorite discount retailer, has been making headlines recently for a wide array of reasons. The common factor in all of these changes and announcements is that the economy and increasing tariff hikes are taking its toll on the company, and Dollar Tree is not alone in this struggle unfortunately.
Dollar Tree makes a big change as it tries to stay afloat
Dollar Tree has established itself as a discount retailer and is often the go-to store for consumers in lower income cohorts. The retailer’s name is indicative of its price point and previously, items in the store could cost as low as a singular dollar. Recently, however, things have been stirring within the company and financially, the retailer has been struggling somewhat.
The company recently announced a price increase that took it from a dollar store to a dollar and a quarter store as the lowest possible price in store increased to $1.25. Additionally, there have also been rumors circulating that another price increase is on the horizon as inflation continues to inflate and tariff hikes have a ripple effect throughout the economy and retail sector.
The latest news with Dollar Store is its decision to divest from its Family Dollar partnership amidst ongoing financial struggles. The retailer first acquired Family Dollar ten years ago in 2015 and will now be selling it to two private equity firms, Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management, for the sum of $1 billion.
At the time, acquiring Family Dollar was a hopeful endeavor on the company’s part, however, things did not pan out as expected. Supply chain issues and other operational challenges were seen from Family Dollar over the years, culminating in this move by Dollar Tree. By selling Family Dollar, the company now hopes to focus on its core needs so as to return the company to a higher level of profitability.
“This is a major milestone in our multi-year transformation journey to help us fully achieve our potential,” Mike Creedon, Chief Executive Officer, Dollar Tree Inc. shared. “We will continue to grow and optimize our Dollar Tree business to maximize value for Dollar Tree associates, customers, and shareholders with an enhanced focus on compelling initiatives, including our expanded assortment, significant planned new store openings across the United States, and transactions that advance our growth strategy.”
Brigade and Macellum have also shared excitement about this acquisition and it appears that they are both quite hopeful for the future of Family Dollar as an independent entity.
“I am excited to collaborate with the Family Dollar team and our incredibly capable and supportive new investors to drive the business forward in this next chapter of its evolution. Family Dollar has a tremendous potential to grow and succeed as an independent company, and I am honored to be able to play a role in helping the company fully realize that opportunity,” Duncan MacNaughton shared. MacNaughton will be joining the Family Dollar family as CEO once the acquisition is finalized.
Have tariffs impacted the dollar store?
For many retailers at the moment, Trump’s gradually increasingly tariffs have been posing the biggest cause for concern and it is more than likely that the effects will reach Dollar Tree sooner or later as well. That being said, any tariff related impact is yet to be seen with the retailer.
Additionally, it seems that even higher income cohorts are now looking to dollar stores as tariff troubles continue to persist.
