By now, there is no doubt that the retail sector at large is trapped in tricky waters. From tariff hikes and the subsequent impending trade war to inflation and stagnant job markets — consumers are simply not shopping as much as they used to.

Family Dollar, a popular discount chain appears to have reached the end of its journey in retail with Dollar Tree and if even discount stores are not surviving the current economy, is there any hope left for retail at all?

Dollar Tree says goodbye to Family Dollar

Brick and mortar retail has seen a great decline in recent years after the popularization of online shopping took the world by fire. The convenience of having your goods delivered to your doorstep is unmatched and many stores have been facing difficulties keeping afloat because of this.

After a lengthy struggle with financial difficulties, Dollar Tree has recently confirmed that it will be divesting from its Family Dollar chain. This move is the company’s bid to restore itself to profitability by means of restructuring and minimizing losses as best as they can.

More than 7,000 Family Dollar stores will be divested from all around the country and this deal marks a significant move in the company’s history. The deal is said to be valued at a surprisingly low amount of $1 billion and as the transaction is finalized, the closing of this chapter for the discount chain will be marked.

In 2015, Dollar Tree initially acquired Family Dollar for nine times the amount it now sold it for. Dollar Tree spent $9 billion on Family Dollar back then and as such, the fact that the company is now selling Family Dollar at such a massive loss is sending shockwaves through the industry as it really does speak to the current dire state of things in retail.

According to an official statement, Family Dollar will now be acquired by Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management. The transfer of ownership is projected to be completed by June 2025 and will “generate approximately $804 million in net proceeds for Dollar Tree.”

A little history on Family Dollar

Shoppers can find more than 7,000 Family Dollar locations spanning the vast estate of the United States. Over the years, the retailer had established itself as the go-to option for consumers in lower income cohorts as it offered products in the extremely cheap price range of $1 to $10.

Unfortunately, no company can remain immune to external economic factors forever and as such, the retailer began to struggle. Growth in popularity for international e-commerce platforms like Shein and Temu and local competition from Walmart and Amazon, coupled with inflation quickly made it rather difficult for the retailer — along with many other discount retailers — to maintain profitability.

Last year alone, Family Dollar closed the doors of over nine hundred locations. According to expert analyses, the reason for these closures was cited as “store clutter, high prices, and overexpansion, factors that have reduced its competitive appeal.” This issue was further worsened by the state of the local economy which compelled consumers to spend less and less, even at discount stores. As a result, Dollar Tree was not left with much room to restructure itself.

Neil Saunders, an analyst at GlobalData Retail has also shared that, “the sale of Family Dollar closes a sad and troubling chapter for Dollar Tree.”

Matt Perkal a partner at Brigade is hopeful for the outcome of the acquisition and has reiterated the importance of Family Dollar in American communities. “Since 1959, Family Dollar has served its customers by offering practical, high-quality products at an excellent price, and it is a fundamental pillar in communities across the United States,” Perkal stated.

Through this acquisition, the new owners of Family Dollar have revealed their aim to “strengthen the brand as an independent company.”
