Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

A recall is occurring at two of America’s biggest retailers, Walmart and Costco, which are looking at the shelves to ensure they have safe and secure products. A recent announcement was made by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), this communication highlighted the urgent recall of a product – canned tuna. All consumers will have to ensure they get rid of the product that has been recalled – to prevent any harmful consequences.

The recall of canned tuna

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated the classification of this recall to a Class II. This is the point of a situation where the use of, or exposure to, an affected product comes into play. It also refers to when a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences to the involved or affected parties or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.

In addition, the FDA has updated the risk level for recalled canned tuna to Class II as mentioned above. These items that were sold at major retailers including Costco, Walmart and Trader Joe’s were recalled. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made an announcement in February 2025, that Tri-Union Seafoods is recalling a selected lots of canned tuna products that were sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B and Trader Joe’s brand names.

The affected products were distributed to several retail stores. Some of these stores are:

  • H-E-B,
  • Trader Joe’s,
  • Costco,
  • Walmart,
  • Safeway,
  • Kroger,
  • Harris Teeter,
  • Publix and other independent retailers.

Reasons for this situation

Communication was received from the company’s supplier that the “easy open” pull tab can lid on limited products, encountered a manufacturing defect. As a result of this specific defect, the integrity of the seal of the canned tuna (especially over time) can be compromised. This can cause the product to leak, or even worse — be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, which is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. Therefore, the recall was made because there was an abundance of caution that occurred.

The process consumers have to follow

The consumers who purchased these products are warned not to use the products. According to the recall notice, consumers are highly encouraged not to use these products, even if the items do not look or smell spoiled.  The consumers who already ate it, and who are feeling unwell, are encouraged to seek immediate medical attention.

In addition, if you do have a recalled tuna can at home, please return it to the retailer for a full refund, throw it away, or you can contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product.

Also, consumers can contact Tri-Union Seafoods at [email protected] or 833-374-0171. Consumers can contact this number or email address if they have any questions or to request replacement product.
