Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

Budgeting has quickly become a necessity of daily life and tariff hikes and growing inflation rates are causing the price of goods to balloon. This leaves the question of where to shop when on a budget?

Aldi has quickly grown in popularity in the United States despite being of international origin. Costco Wholesale has an enticing offering and whilst the pricing at the warehouse is competitive, it does come with the small caveat of an annual membership fee. Then there are other options like dollar stores, however, the offerings there are not as broad as your average supermarket.

So where is the most budget friendly place to shop?

Costco, Aldi, Target, Walmart, and so much more — who to pick?

YouGov recently conducted a survey to better understand the preferences of consumers in the supermarket sector of America. The survey aimed to study “purchasing trends and consumer perceptions, offers a detailed view of the competitive landscape in a market marked by price sensitivity and changing customer expectations.”

The results of the survey show that affordability, quality, and service are all important factors taken into consideration when consumers make their choices. As such, the survey titled Walmart as the undisputed leader.

For most U.S. consumers, Walmart is the first choice for grocery shopping. In fact, due to the vast number of Walmart stores around the country, it has been concluded that just about every American lives within a ten mile radius from a Walmart.

According to YouGov’s survey, Walmart left other retailers far behind and took the lead with a 63% preference. This figure reiterates the retailer’s strong positioning in the food and essentials market.

Target placed second with a considerably lower preference rate of 42.2% when compared to Walmart. Retail, particularly that of groceries or essentials, is an especially concentrated market meaning that competition is as stiff as it gets — particularly during tough economic times.

Aldi, Kroger, and Costco took the remaining spots in the top five and the preference percentages for the three were quite close. With its cost-cutting and efficiency based business model, Aldi ranked third with a 32.8% preference rate. Costco and its warehouse styled wholesale experience ranked in with a 31.8%, and lastly, Kroger raked in a 23.9% preference with its traditional supermarket chain offering.

The remainder of supermarkets that made its way into the rankings included Sam’s Club with 22.8%, Trader Joe’s with 20.5%, Whole Foods Market with 15.9%, Publix with 13.3%, and Amazon Fresh with 12%.

With regards to the influence the tense economic climate has on purchasing patterns, vice president of YouGov, Kenton Barello said, “In an environment characterized by rising costs of living, consumers are prioritizing affordability and seeking options that fit their budgets.”

Online shopping

The study also covered online shopping preferences and Walmart once again took the lead with a 64% preference. The survey was carried out with consumers who had shopped in the last ninety days and Amazon placed second with 34% which is quite a steep gap from Walmart. Target placed third with 19%.

For online shopping, convenience and efficiency were the two key factors consumers based their choices around. Perks like fast delivery, free shipping, or not having to leave their homes are valued greatly.

Additionally, consumers have also showed additional interest in matters such as “product availability notifications, online product comparisons, improved search filters, detailed product information, and shopper reviews.”

The survey was also analyzed by demographic group and across all age groups, Walmart still managed to rank as the top preferred supermarket. The preference rates ranged from 62.8% to 64%. Second place for all age groups — from Boomers to Gen Zs — was given to Target.

Costco was ranked third and was particularly enjoyed by Millennials and Gen Z. Conversely, the older cohort of consumers showed a preference for Aldi.
