Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

America’s retailers are in major competition. Sam’s Club is making statements about an expected increase in membership. With this new information, many people wonder what this may mean to the retailer’s competitors like Costco. This may also be shocking for some because Sam’s Club was extremely quiet these past few years, and suddenly it is making these bold claims. The retailer, which is a brand owned by Walmart, did not receive much attention from Walmart these past few years. Is that about to change? The question now is, how is Sam’s Club planning on being a strong competitor against Costco?

The story behind this sudden growth plans

Costco has always been one of the top retailers that gives consumers what they want and need, with proper research. Although there has been news about several changes and updates within Costco stores, these changes came as a result of ongoing research and feedback from consumers. It is critical to know that Costco always takes its time when it comes to the implementation of changes. The reason for this is to ensure that the changes do not happen suddenly, unlike its competitors.

In addition, something that makes Costco stand out amongst the rest is the fact that the retailer does not necessarily implement big changes. Instead, it focuses on implementing 15-20 stores in new locations annually, while managing operations and merchandise. This is contrary to the warehouse’s competitors who are focused on making big changes quickly, and as a result of this, the changes do not always last.

On the other hand, Sam’s Club has been less exciting over the past few years, with little going on, up until recently. Even though Walmart did not give much attention to the Sam’s Club brand, that is slowly coming to an end. It looks like Walmart has seen the potential in the brand and is planning on investing in it. An important statement to note is that the company does not plan to take down Costco – but one can only imagine what motivated the investment plans.

Sam’s Club: New membership plan

On Walmart’s investor day, the CEO of Sam’s Club, Chris Nicholas, shared his thoughts and views on a new plan for his chair. Unlike many of the other executives who spoke at this event, Nicholas actually shared some crucial insight. Firstly, he emphasised the fact that the company is planning on redefining what the Club’s future will look like. Secondly, he made an important point, that the company will determine success through the growth of its membership.

Additionally, this shows that the Sam’s Club model does not place much emphasis on sales but is highly focused on membership retention. Nicholas supported this by stating that the company has made significant growth and it’s now focused on listening to its members. Now, the members are telling the retailer they want more, thus the retailer is listening. Thirdly, Nicholas stated that they have learned, they have listened, and now they have adjusted the company’s value proposition.

He further stated that over the next 8 to 10 years, Sam’s Club aims to double its membership and as a result of this, the sales and profit will also increase. The aim now is to increase returns for Walmart Inc through creating conditions for aggressive growth.

The role of digitalization in the retailer’s plans

As stated by Nicholas, technology will play a major role in Sam’s Club’s success, both in-store and online. With the growth of digital platforms, the company is positive that they can perform even better and faster. As the Club is busy redefining its future, it is also thinking about what would best serve its members. He shared some ideas that are listed below:

  • Scan & Go can be focuses point for the retailer, because it is now broadly adopted, with Grapevine that is around 100%.
  • Just Go AI computer vision that exit a scale from zero.
  • The company’s new eComm value proposition, which offers free shipping to Plus members and free pickup for Club members.
  • Personalized connected ads leveraging AI are now a reality.
