This is not the news any patient or staff member of a healthcare provider wants to hear. A shocking announcement was made when a major healthcare provider in America filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy – putting many patients at risk across various regions. This major chain makes provision for healthcare services for several specialty hospitals. It filed with a bankruptcy report so that the businesses can receive recognition.

Healthcare sectors facing bankruptcy

The healthcare sector is currently facing many difficulties and is under a lot of pressure. Over the past few years, especially this year, 2025, the sector has been experiencing a financial headwind after it ended 2024 with the second-highest level of bankruptcy filings over six years of 2019-2024.

However, there was some good news in these difficult past few years. Last year, the good news was that the filings of bankruptcy decreased by 28% to 57 bankruptcies in 2024 from a peak of 79 bankruptcies that was filled in 2023. According to the annual survey that was conducted by advisory firm Gibbins Advisors, these numbers exceeded the average of 42 filings per year which were indicated between 2019 to 2022.

Healthcare Providers filing for bankruptcy

As mentioned, healthcare providers filling for Chapter 11 bankruptcy is not a new thing. Infact some of the most prominent Chapter 11 filings in 2024 included providers in Miami, Fla.-based clinical care centre operator CareMax Inc. This provider filed for bankruptcy protection in November 2024, and it was seeking a sale for all of the company’s assets.

In addition, the filing for bankruptcy in November 2024 was made by Wellpath Holdings, which were identified as a leading healthcare provider for prisons and mental health facilities. This provider filed for Chapter 11 protection to reorganise its businesses and also to make provision to sell certain assets to an ad hoc group of its prepetition lenders. Also, a New Jersey-based hospital and health centre institution, CarePoint Health Systems, filed for Chapter 11 in November 2024 to reorganise the companies’ unsustainable debt.

If this is not enough, a major healthcare provider Prospect Medical Holdings, began 2025 by filing for bankruptcy in January with plans to reorganise certain medical assets. This provider owned and operated in 16 acute care and behavioural hospitals in California, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. The aim was also to sell two medical centres in Rhode Island and divest from another in Pennsylvania through its case.

Currently, the main organisation of six Landmark Hospital specialty hospital facilities made the major to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The aim for it is to reorganise its companies that are situated in three different states in the Midwest and South. Landmark Holdings of Florida LLC on 9 March, filed its petition in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida, listing $10 million to $50 million in assets and $50 million to $100 million in liabilities.

Reasons for the financial challenges

The healthcare sector had only five bankruptcy filings in 2024, which is a decrease from 12 in 2023. However, the Steward Health Care System filing included 31 hospitals, and it was the largest hospital bankruptcy in the last 30 years. This alternately had a big impact on the sector, but the main question people may ask is “why is the sector struggling financially?”

There is no easy way to answer this question, as we look at the cost of living and the price, we have to pay to stay alive. As could be imagined, there are many reasons why healthcare providers find it difficult to operate successfully in the current sector. Some of the reasons why the healthcare industry has been experiencing financial distress include:

  • Capital constraints,
  • Cost of living increases
  • Labour shortages,
  • Healthcare regulatory changes,
  • Issues experienced with the payments from commercial
  • Issues with the management of care payors
  • Medicare Advantage claims, and
  • Macroeconomic challenges.

All these aspects need to be taken into account, because at the end of the millions of patients will suffer due to this decision that’s continuously being made by healthcare providers – to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
