Restructuring has become a necessity for retailers in the current economic climate. Brick and mortar sales have been on the decline for the last several years now, with experts even blaming the COVID-19 pandemic as the catalyst that caused this massive shift in how the retail market operates.

Walmart, the top retailer in the industry, has been facing some struggles as well — particular this year. From Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion controversies that led to large scale boycotts, to enacting store closures and now, the trouble with Trump’s tariffs and its impending impact on the price of goods. What is the retailer’s plan to maintain its spot at the top?

Walmart closes some stores

The supermarket giant currently has over four thousand stores in operation across the country, alongside a significant number of overseas operations as well. However, customers and employees alike were both rather shocked when the company announced it will be closing down some its stores during the first quarter of 2025 as part of a bigger plan to restructure and reconfigure itself to evolving market trends.

This year alone, the company has already shuttered eleven locations, with California being the most impacted as multiple locations in that region were closed down permanently. The remainder of the stores that closed down were located in other states, including, Georgia, Maryland, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Colorado.

The complete list of stores that were closed during the first three months of 2025 are as follows:

  • Georgia : Ashford Dunwoody Road (Dunwoody), Walmart Neighborhood Market on Roswell Road (Marietta).
  •  Maryland : 1238 Putty Hill Ave. (Towson).
  •  Ohio : 3579 S. High St. (Columbus).
  •  Wisconsin : 7025 W. Main St. (Milwaukee).
  • Colorado : 10400 E Colfax Ave. (Aurora).
  •  California : 2121 Imperial Avenue (San Diego), 605 Fletcher Parkway (El Cajon), 2753 E. Eastland Center Dr. (West Covina), 40580 Albrae Street (Fremont), 4080 Douglas Boulevard (Granite Bay).

The company felt that these closures were a necessary move in response to evolving consumer habits and an increasing sense of competition from other retailers. By closing the doors of its underperforming stores, the company would now be able to optimize and redirect these resources towards more profitable ventures.

Future plans for the company

Through this redirection of resources, the retailer hopes to fulfill its goal of expanding its gas station and convenience store presence across the country.  Dave DeSerio, vice president of fuel and convenience at Walmart US, explained that, “By adding dozens of fuel and convenience stations this year, we’re bringing even more value to our customers. Customers shop at Walmart for our low prices and convenient deals , and our fuel stations are another example of how we’re responsive to the needs of our customers and members.”

Customers need not feel any sense of uncertainty because of the closure announcement, as it is quite clear the company has a well fleshed out plan to better optimize its operations. Walmart remains committed to continuously strengthen its market presence and this gas station expansion is a prime example of this.

Rather than expanding or continuing to invest in underperforming stores, the company is channeling those resources towards “opening and renovating gas stations and small neighborhood markets, allowing it to offer more convenience and value to its customers.”

With regards to the skyrocketing tariffs and its impact on the price of goods, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon seems confident in the company’s ability to maintain its low price point for customers.

“Tariffs are something we’ve managed for many years, and we’ll just continue to manage that,” McMillon reiterated in the latest earnings call.

On the same earnings call, Walmart’s chief financial officer John David Rainey, however, felt caution should still be exercised since there are “still uncertainties related to consumer behavior and global economic and geopolitical conditions.”
