Some loyal consumers of the retailer JCPenney can expect to receive some bad news. There is currently a list made public of JCPenney stores being closed down in various locations. This will occur over the next few months which will impact the United States retail sector tremendously. Another eight stores are expected to close during 2025 – leaving consumers at a loss for words!
The story behind the closure of JCPenney stores
JCPenney has stores operating in over 650 locations – the stores are closing down in 8 of these locations and other closures of JCPenney stores also closed down over the past year. Physical retailers have continuously experienced difficulties since the COVID-19 pandemic. We knew that businesses would suffer as a result of the pandemic, and this is what we are currently witnessing. Some of the market dynamic effects that retailers continue to experience are the shift in consumer habits and e-commerce’s growing dominance.
Additionally, many retailers suffered severely due to the fact that they could not adjust to the aforementioned market dynamics. It is expected that a number of 15 000 stores will close in 2025 – this is an increase from 7 325 last year. Also, the number of new stores that are expected to open decreased from 5 970 to 5 800. Various retailers announced the closures, consolidations, and also bankruptcy – due to the suffering of the retail sector. Some of these stores include retailers like:
- Kohl’s
- Bargain Hunt
- Big Lots
Some of the others popular stores who are planning on reducing their store presence during this year are:
- Walgreens
- Macy’s
- Starbucks

The comments on these significant changes
JCPenney announced that the closure of the stores in these various locations is unrelated to the company’s recent merge with Sparc. Sparc is a retail store operator, and the two companies announced their alliances in January 2025. Additionally, this merge is bringing the portfolios of these two retailer stores under a joint Catalyst Brands Label. In addition, the GlobalData Managing Director stated that there are some good aspects occurring at JCPenney and that management is trying to move the business forward. However, they all feel that the progress they are making is very limited.
Furthermore, since the retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2020, the number of stores in the chain decreased from 850 stores to 650 stores. However, the retailer seems optimistic about its recent merge with Sparc. Although the retailer did not see the best financial results the past year the merger will help JCPenney to get back on its feet. The company’s CEO Marc Rosen stated that the merger will allow for the leverage of resources to occur, as well as making provision for the best-in-class retail industry talent, to grow their brand further.
