Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

One of America’s top retailers, Costco, recently changed its operating time, which will only benefit some consumers. Only the executive members of the retailer will get access to an extended shopping time when it is more convenient. This is earlier in the morning when the store will be quieter. Consumers who are non-executive members will not be allowed in the store during the special early time slots, that is set apart for the elite members.

The new company policy

After there had been a grace period for a few months, it ended at the end of August 2025. Then on Monday, September 01, the new policy started to be strictly enforced. It benefits the executive members of Costco, with the highest and most expensive membership tier. These members will get access to a private, hour-long shopping window during most mornings before the store opens to the rest of the retailer’s consumers.

In addition, the company first revealed its plans to introduce the expanded shopping time for executive members in June 2025, through a social media post. Executive members were also emailed by the company management about the new benefit. This means that the retailer made communication to a selected category of people who may benefit from this new policy.

According to a Facebook post, the retailer’s food courts, pharmacies and many other departments in the warehouse will participate in these extended hours policy. However, the pharmacies will remain close on a Sunday. The retail giant, Costco, had a 37.6 million paid executive memberships at the end of the third quarter.

This new policy was rolled out earlier this year and a grace period was provided to see how it will work. Now that the grace period ended at the end of August 2025, only a certain category of consumers will benefit from this.  More than 37 million consumers who has the $130-per-year membership will have extended hours to shopping.

The operating hours will be between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on weekdays and Sundays. These members will have from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays. The Gold Star and Business members will only be able to start shopping at 10 a.m. on weekdays and on Sunday. When it comes to Saturdays, the members can also start shopping at 9:30.

The retailer’s constant changes to benefit consumers

Several retailers are trying to capitalize on spending by their higher-earning customers. In Costco’s case, these are generally the consumers who belongs to the executive membership tier. Costco is among several other retail powerhouses, as well as top companies in the restaurant and travel space. These companies are increasingly custom-making their offerings to attract the type of customers the economy weighs on lower- and middle-income consumers.

David Tinsley, who is the senior economist for the Bank of America Institute, made a statement on FOX Business. He stated that the Bank of America credit and debit card data indicates that spending growth for higher- and middle-income households is surpassing that of lower-income households.

According to Tinslay, “When we look at the labor market, particularly wage growth, we see something similar – higher income wage growth outpacing lower-income households’ wage growth – and the gap is widening. So, short-term at least, this momentum will likely continue.” He further alluded to the fact that these divergences are likely playing a big role in retailers’ strategies.

At the end of the day, it is also important to consider how the broader consumer environment will be affected by this new policy. We also know that this is a way for the retailer to encourage people to become executive members.
