Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

One of America’s Top Retailers, ALDI, just made the headlines based on the retailer’s expansion in the United States.  This is big news, especially since it is not the general retail giants like Costco or Walmart who made this big move. This move plays a pivotal role against the retailer’s rivals, especially because the retailer is viewed as a small grocery chain. Now, this “small” grocery chain is making big moves.

Details on this big expansion

Only a few people could have predicted that what began as a small discount grocer in Germany would so quickly become one of the fastest-growing grocery chains in the United States. The grocery chain Aldi, known for its no-frills shopping experience and affordable prices, is expanding its U.S. footprint. This expansion is occurring at such a rapid pace that even the retailer’s American rivals cannot keep up with it.

In addition, Aldi revealed about the company’s bold plans to open more than 225 new stores nationwide. Therefore, this expansion marks the retailer’s largest-ever single-year expansion. This big move is part of a five-year national growth strategy with an investment that accounts for $9 billion, to increase its United States’ footprint significantly.

Moreover, this is definitely a huge leap the company is taking from the almost 120 stores Aldi opened in 2024. These store openings brought the retailer’s total store count to more than 2,400 nationwide. Therefore, as of early 2025, the retailer has been in active operating mode in more than 2,500 locations. As a result of this, it is making Aldi the third-largest grocery chain in the United States by location numbers.

Impact on the retailer’s rivals

Aldi’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jason Hart made a statement pertaining to the company’s big moves. He stated that Aldi is earning the trust of consumers in more and larger communities due to the expansion. The company is expecting to earn the trust of consumers in more communities than it ever covered before.

Therefore, this is a way of bringing the retailer closer to becoming America’s first stop for groceries. Aldi has been focused on building a loyal consumer base in the United States. With the company’s minimalist approach and cost-cutting operational practices, it will allow the retailer to provide continuous low and affordable prices than its rivals. Hence, Aldi just became massive competition against America’s large retailers such as Walmart and Costco.

Locations where the new ALDI stores will operate

The company still has to reveal the full list of its 2025 store openings. It has been stated and confirmed that almost half will be conversions of former Winn-Dixie and Harvey Supermarket sites. These stores were acquired in 2023 from Southeast Grocers and are mostly located in across Southeastern states and Florida

In addition, the grocery chain shared some of the plans to open its largest New York City location to date. This will be a 25,000-square-foot store which will be located near Times Square. This store is expected to open in the summer of 2026. Consumers are encouraged to get themselves ready for amazing experiences.

Also, this specific high-traffic area provides Aldi the opportunity to serve Manhattan residents and also to reach millions of tourists. In this way it will assist with the boosting of the brand awareness of the company and introduce its products to new audiences. However, it has been confirmed that Aldi’s ambitions do not stop there.

The retailer increased the total of stores it is planning to open by the end of 2025. This number has been increased with more than double; this move will possibly increase its store count to around 2,600. Aldi also has plans to open more than 800 additional stores by the end of 2028.
