There is major news for one of America’s top retailers, Target. Consumers who find it convenient to shop at the retailer and get their personal care and beauty products are in for a surprise. The retailer and Ultra Beauty have been working side by side for the past four years, since 2021. Now, these two partners came to a decision to go their separate ways.
The end of a strong partnership
For many consumers, this may be extremely sad news, especially those who were used to shopping at the retailer and, for convenience purposes, purchased their personal care and beauty products at Ultra Beauty. In August 2026, consumers will no longer find an Ultra Beauty section at the retailer’s partner. It has been stated that this has been a mutual decision that the two parties came to.
Last Thursday, it was announced that the collaboration between the two companies will not be renewed when their shop-in-shop contract expires in August 2026. Consumer can still purchase their Ulta Beauty items at the retailer stores and on its website, until August next year.
Additionally, the announcement of the end of this partnership came after both retailers announced in April, that they will be pausing plans to produce more Ulta Beauty-branded sections within the Target stores. In 2022, the retailer and Ulta Beauty aimed to have 800 Target stores that would occupy the beauty sections. However, currently the total stands at 610 stories which is also the final count.
The Target and Ulta Beauty partnership
In 2021, these two companies came to a decision to go into a partnership. Ulta Beauty truly had a unique sense on Target’s beauty department. It elevated the retailer’s department by offering consumers access to amazing benefits like personal care and beauty products. These products are generally unavailable in drugstores and department stores and the fact that consumers could get it at Target, were extremely convenience and beneficial.
In addition, because of this partnership, over 600 Target locations across the United States were remodelled their beauty departments. The remodelled beauty departments of these stores included a 1000 square-foot Ulta Beauty branded section. Also, the partnership allowed consumers to use both their Ultra Beauty Rewards and Target Circle accounts together. As a result of this, it allowed consumers to maximise their benefits.
According to the announcement that was made, both companies stated that they will remain committed to providing a seamless shopping experience to consumers. Also, both companies will ensure product availability through the end of this collaboration. However, not one of the retailers indicated the reason for the end of this partnership. Additionally, it is unclear how the retailer plans to repurpose the space that is currently used by the beauty provider.
Impact on consumers and the retailer
After the partnership with these two powerhouses, it would be difficult to find a replacement. However, nothing has been announced about finding any replacement partners. Instead, the companies are both dedicated to continuing to serve its consumers with the best value and quality products. The consumers who made use of the benefit rewards for both companies, will now have to think about alternative options.
Also, the consumers who shopped at Ulta Beauty because of convenience, may they be shopping at the retailer, should also find another beauty provider. However, consumers still have a year left to enjoy the perks of this partnership until it comes to an end next year August.
One could also just think about the foot traffic the beauty provided attracted to the retailer and the impact that may have on Target after the end of this partnership. This is another blow for Target after it was announced about the tariff rates, and the price increased the retailer is planning to embark on.
