T-Mobile is a well-established mobile and telecommunications company used by many Americans. Now, the company is on the verge of introducing a major new change. This change is expected to affect millions of individuals and has quickly become an “unpopular” move taken by the company. As this change will be enforced on people, it has already received major backlash.

Details about the new change

T-Mobile has made it clear on several occasions that the company is unafraid to pull a lever that customers hate. As the phone carrier welcomes new customers, some of the phone services have become more expensive over the past few months. Since last year, T-Mobile has been increasing the monthly bills of customers with its older phone plans from $2 to $5.

In April 2025, the company also increased its monthly Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery fee from $3.49 to $3.99. Also, when it comes to the voice lines, it experienced an increase from $1.40 to $1.60, and this is for data-only lines. These price increases recently had unintended negative consequences as experienced by the company.

In the T-Mobile’s latest earnings report, it revealed that although the company welcomed 830,000 new postpaid phone customers during the second quarter of this year, the postpaid phone churn, which is the number of customers who disconnected their phone service of the company, increased by 10 basis points year over year.

T-Mobile is implementing a fee increase

T-Mobile has already been at a disadvantaged by losing loyal phone customers. But again, the company made the decision to hike a massive fee. Something that make the increase different this time around, is the fact that it is impacting all of its customers.

As stated by a new update on the company’s website, T-Mobile warns customers who do not pay their bills on time. At the beginning of November 1, 2025, the company’s late fee will increase from $7 to $10, or it can be 5% of the consumer’s past due balance. The mobile company will select which price is higher.

Due to state law, customers in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and those who reside in New York have their late fees capped. This means that these customers will pay less compared to others. According to T-Mobile’s website, “Late fees can be avoided by paying your bill by the payment due date or setting up AutoPay, which can be through your account online or in T-Life.” The last time T-Mobile increased its late fee was in 2022. At the time, the fee increased from $5 to $7, or 5% of the customer’s monthly charges.

The public’s opinion

The has been backlash about this new change T-Mobile implemented that affects all customers. Some of these customers took their frustration and unhappiness about this change to social media. On this platform, specifically Reddit, many express how they feel about the fee increase.

One of the consumers made a post on Reddit stating, “Obviously this isn’t an issue if you pay your bill on time. But now with how everything has gone up, this feels like it’s feeding upon those who might have trouble paying their bill one month or they lose their job and have a hard time paying, etc….” Another customer shared this sentiment and added that they cancelled and rather switched to Verizon. This same customer stated that they have been waiting for an excuse to switch because a nearly Trillion Dollar company is targeting poor people, which is complete nonsense.

Also, it is no surprise, as could be imagined, that customers are frustrated about this entire increase. The fact that the phone bills across the telecom industry have drastically increased, add a lot of pressure on users. Data that was found in a recent survey, indicated that 42% of Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T customers have seen their phone bills increased in the past year. This is a much higher amount of 7% on average. Additionally, 58% of these customers have been considering switching to a different phone carrier since the prices are continuously increasing.
