One of America’s top retailers, Target, is in the news about a lawsuit that was filed against the retailer. The lawsuit was filed by the employees of the retail giant due to the unhappiness many employees experience. Many of the employees are unhappy about the distance they have to walk in order to clock in and then clock out again. Now, the retailer has to deal with the pressure that comes with the lawsuit. This is an important situation because many employees are unhappy. After all, they have been losing out on thousands of dollars because they have not been paid for the long-distance walk.
Employees filed a lawsuit against Target
Several employees of multiple Target warehouses across New York City have filed a lawsuit against the company. These employees are claiming that they need to be paid for the time spent walking to and from their workstations. According to the lawsuit, hourly employees of the retailer are required to take long-distance walks, which account for about half a mile.
In addition, the long distance has been walked by the employees, where they have to walk from their assigned departments, to where they have to clock in and clock out. As part of the company rules every employee is required to clock in at the start of each shift and then clock out again, at the end of each shift.
Details about the lawsuit
The complaint alleges violations of New York City labor laws. According to a local newspaper Times Union, this lawsuit was filed on August 26, 2025, in U.S. District Court in Albany. The law firm that is representing the employees indicated that thousands of workers could claim for thousands of dollars. This is because of back pay for each year they were employed at the two different warehouses since the year 2019.
In addition, these two sites, that are located in the towns of Wilton and Florida employed a combined 2,000 people. The Wilton warehouse has a large space such as a 1.5 million square feet of space. While the Florida Target warehouse, which is located just outside the city of Amsterdam, is about 1.8 million square feet.
The views of employees
Jeanna Kratzert, who is a former Target employee at the Wilton warehouse, was one of the initial people who filed this lawsuit. The other person involved in the filing of the lawsuit is Neil Mosher, who are currently employed at the same warehouse.
In addition, Kratzert told a local news outlet WNYT, when she was still working at that Target warehouse, it took her up to 10 minutes to walk to her assigned places to clock in or out. If one would clearly think about this, 10 minute is a long duration, and many things can still be done in just 10 minutes. The lawsuit alleges an employee not who is not paid for that time, the 10 minutes of walking, can miss out on up to $2,000 per year.
Therefore, many employees are unhappy about this lost that have been enduring for the past few years. It might not seem like a lot when you look at it per minute or per day. But since the lawsuit found that employees could have missed out on $2,000 per year, is a lot for many employees.
Although this is big news to the retailer, it is important that these things are addressed so that the retailer can operate as per usual. It is important that big retailers like Target focus on the needs of their employees and trying their best to keep their employees happy. Because if an employee is unhappy this will eventually impact the operation and effectiveness of the company. As a result, the consumers will also be affected at the end of the day.
