Those individuals who are visiting the airport should be keep in mind of the changes that is currently implemented. TSA just implemented a rule change which will excite many travellers. Previously travellers were required to take off their shoes for security purposes, but this past Monday that rule expired. Yes, you read correctly. Travelers are no longer required to take of their shoes when going through the security checkpoints.
History of the TSA Shoe-off rule
This rule was implemented in as part of the TSA screening policy to ensure safety for all travellers. In 2001 a British terrorist named Richard Reid, unsuccessfully tried to explode homemade bombs that were hidden in his shoes. His shoes were filled with 10 ounces of explosive material as stated by an FBI account. This incident took place on a flight from Paris to Miami.
Furthermore, in August 2006 the shoe-off rule policy came into effect. According to the TSA website the reason for the implementation was that a screening for explosives should occur for security purposes. This is to prevent from going through the same or similar situation what travellers experienced in 2001. Therefore, passengers in standard screening ques were required to remove their shoes and place it one the X-ray belts. There shoes went through the X-ray scanning machine with other appliances such as laptops, liquids, belts and outerwear.

Removal of the screening rule
The removal of this rule came into effect on Monday, August 4, 2025. Although TSA did not make a public statement of it, sources who knows the whereabout, confirmed it. Kristi Noem, Homeland Security Secretary spoke at a press briefing on Tuesday, August 05, 2025. This occurred at the Washington, D.C.’s Reagan National Airport, where she stated that all travellers who make use of the domestic airports are allowed to keep on their shoes, when going through the TSA screening points.
In addition, she further stated that she believes travellers would be extremely excited about this policy change that was implemented. Previously, only travellers who were enrolled in TSA PreCheck, were allowed to keep on their shoes. The United States Travel Association, which is an industry advocacy group, cheered this shoe-rule change. According to a stated that was made on Wednesday by the Chief Executive Officer Geoff Freeman, the removing of this shoe-rule is a win for all travellers.
Impact of Technology
In this same statement the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Geoff Freeman, also alludes to the role technology plays in this major decision. He gave credit to cutting-edge screening technology that is now used at the airports, travellers can now go through screening point without removing their shoes. He also gives credit to the ability to make strong decisions.
As a result of the use of technology, travellers can expect to experience a more stable, coherent, and efficient process at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening points. He also added that the implementation of technology works in favour of time management. When travellers had to take of their shoes, added more time to the screening process. Therefore, if shoes are no longer removed, it will reduce the waiting times and streamline air travel for all Americans
However, this does not mean that thorough screening will not occur. Officers of the TSA may still require some of the air travellers to go through additional screening measures. Only then, travellers will be asked to remove their shoes as well, for security purposes. According to a former TSA worker, Caleb Harmon-Marshall, the removing of the shoe-rule is one of the biggest TSA screenings changes in over a decade. He now manages the Gate Access, which is a site about the rights of passengers, and was the first to comment on the change of this policy.
