Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

Over the past few months, Walmart has made several changes to its stores. Some of the main reasons for these changes are the fact that the retailer wants to be more digital since the world is becoming more technology driven. Also, the company wants to make life easier, convenient, and time-effective for its consumers. Therefore, it recently launched a new system that can track meat and bread. One of the key features of the system is that it will be able to monitor the freshness of food.

The story behind this new move

Walmart rolled out an automated item-level identification for fresh foods. This is a long-overdue system, and many grocery stores would truly benefit from investing in something like this. The retailer collaborated with Avery Dennison, which enables RFID technology in high-moisture and cold environments such as meat cases.

The omnichannel retail giant Walmart is keeping its foot on the accelerator for a change to a more digital supply chain. It announced a collaboration with Avery Dennison to advance the use of radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology in fresh food categories which was previously not possible.

In addition, this specific move is coming after three weeks since Walmart named the tech vendor Wiliot to help it deploy millions of ambient internet of things (IoT) sensors across Walmart’s supply chain. The goal of this implementation is to enhance supply chain efficiency, inventory accuracy, and cold chain compliance.

The process of Walmart’s new launched system

When it comes to the Avery Dennison initiative, it is safe to say that it has the potential to improve inventory processes. Also, this initiative is capable of enhancing both associate and consumer experiences across the various fresh departments, especially the bakery, meat and deli.

As stated by Walmart, the “first-to-market solution” will be addressing the market demand as it is addressing food waste and ensuring freshness are more important than ever for consumers, producers, and retailers. More specifically, this approach introduces automated item-level identification, with the aim to address the longstanding industry challenge of using RFID technology in high-moisture, cold environments, like meat cases.

The view of others

Julie Vargas, who is the VP and GM of Avery Dennison Identification Solutions made a statement release. She said that “Supporting Walmart with first-to-market RFID innovation across multiple fresh food categories underscores our mutual commitment to people and the planet. By giving each item its own digital identity, associates instantly know the freshness of the foods they are handling, enabling better inventory management and resulting in less waste.”
