One of America’s biggest retailers, Walmart, just made a massive move that might come as a shock to many individuals. As we are all aware, the past few weeks/months have been filled with tariff rate increases, and as a result, retailers felt forced to increase the prices of imported products. The retailer made several adjustments to the prices of products; however, it is reverting these prices to stop consumers from fleeing. The concern now is how the retailer will get away with this big move amid the continuous tariff hikes.

Increased Tariff Rates

Over the past few months, the rates of tariffs have continued to increase. This came after the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, enforced higher tariffs on imported products. This was to encourage consumers to purchase locally produced products. Also, it was to encourage the importing countries to open stores locally, which financially benefits America.

These tariffs are rates that taxes companies have to pay to import products from overseas, and the extra cost is often passed down to consumers through price hikes. As a result of this, many retailers had to make the difficult decision to increase the prices of these products. In April 2025, President Donald Trump made and announcement about a 10% baseline tariff on almost all United States imports. By August 7. 2025, these increased tariffs were implemented, thus, impacting dozens of the country’s trade partners.

Walmart was one of the many top retailers in America, that had to increase the prices of certain products, and this impacted both the retailer and the consumers. Even though the retailer has been fighting to keep the prices of its products as low as possible, to cater for the consumers, some of the prices had to increase.

Walmart’s big move to retain consumers

Now, the retailer just made a move to prevent consumers from fleeing to rival stores. As one could imagine, consumers were unhappy because of the high prices, specifically on some daily used products. The unhappiness is due to the fact that Walmart is known for its quality products with low prices.

Moreover, the increased momentum for consumers came after Walmart rolled out 7,400 price rollbacks during the quarter without making any noise. This silent move was 2,000 more than last quarter, although it is facing higher tariff costs. Doug McMillon, the CEO of Walmart, stated that the retailer will keep its prices as low as it can, for as long as it can. He shared this on August 22, 2025, on earnings call. McMillon further alluded to the fact that their merchants have been innovative and responded with urgency. This was to avoid what would have been additional pressure towards the consumers and store members.

In addition, in March 2025, Walmart quietly started with a plan to reduce the pressure of paying higher tariffs. The retailer approached several suppliers of China to ask them to reduce their prices with up to 10%. This means that the burden of the tariff rates placed on the suppliers, would then shift. Then, in April 2025, the executives of the retailer met with President Donald Trump to discuss his tariff policy. It has been confirmed by a spokesperson that the meeting has been productive.

Impact on consumers’ behaviour

Due to the high increase of prices on products, consumers are taking extreme measures to protect their finances. As indicated by a recent marker research report company Wunderkind, 58% of consumers experience feelings like caution, pessimistic, and panic when they think about the country’s economy. Therefore, these concerns led to 35% of consumers who are seeking more deals while they are shopping. On the other hand, 31% of these consumers are starting to purchase fewer nonessential products, and 31% of consumers are shopping less overall.
