Apple invades the Army
Forbes has a
revealing story about how the Army may be using up to 20,000 Apple computers in the field. The reporter, who interviewed Lieutenant Colonel C.J. Wallington, a division chief in the Army's office of enterprise information systems, noted that "the military is quietly working to integrate Macintosh computers into its systems to make them harder to hack."
The Army's Apple program was created in 2005 and, according to the story, the Army will start installing software on the units to make them work with Common Access Cards. Arlington, Texas-based Thursby Software will provide this software.
GCN Tech Blog hasn't been following Apple all too closely, figuring Mac use in government is a onesy-twosy.affair. Last September we saw a Secret Service solicitation pop up on Federal Business Opportunities for an entire 27 Apple Mac. But maybe Mac is slowly making its way into the government enterprise. Perhaps the Office of Management and Budget should
hurry its efforts at approving a Federal Desktop Core Configuration for
Macs.
