Pentagon leverages converged solution for private cloud migration

The Office of the Secretary of Defense will be virtualizing servers from the Enterprise Information Technology Services Directorate and Army Information Technology Agency into a private cloud environment. The program – which is estimated to take 12 months – will consolidate and migrate more than 1,000 servers, including all types of information, data and workloads.

Using a converged solution from Nutanix, a supplier of web-scale IT infrastructure solutions, OSD will decrease its datacenter footprint significantly, replacing 60 racks with 10 racks of Nutanix’s hardware/software appliances, which converge compute and storage into a single tier, the company said.

Nutanix provides modular, ‘building block’ scaling that lets agencies grow incrementally. It meets government security requirements such as FIPS 140-2, NSA Suite B support (to Top Secret), Common Criteria EAL2+, NIST-SP800-131A, among others.  The firm also integrates its own comprehensive electronic Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG), which provides machine-readable code that eliminates time-consuming testing by enterprise security teams, the company said.

The Army’s Program Executive Office for Aviation used a Nutanix solution for its virtual desktop infrastructure pilot.  The converged storage and hardware unit proved simpler to procure and took up less rack space.   Nutanix’s solution supported the same number of virtual desktops in about 4U of rack space, about 10 percent of a full-size rack.

I hear the Nutanix implementation ongoing for 2 years is stuck with 1500 users. The reason: contractors hate losing their jobs to Nutanix which requires 10-20% less FTE to manage. Higher converged is hyper unfriendly to contractors.

Nutanix has killer technology and has all the big boys paying attention. Everything virtual on virtualized everything (EVOVE). This is the true promise. There are exceptional virtual network appliances and with NFV becoming real, we should all reconsider our future in a hyper converged world.
