Million Veteran Program signs up bio analysis firm for hybrid cloud

The Department of Veterans Affairs is getting some help for its Million Veteran Program (MVP) from Seven Bridges, a biomedical analysis company that will develop both a hybrid cloud for large-scale data analysis and a genotype-phenotype graph analysis engine.

The MVP seeks to build one of the world’s largest medical databases by collecting blood and health information on 1 million veteran volunteers. The resulting database of genomic information can help researchers advance precision medicine. Currently, more than 450,000 veterans are in the program.

Under a collaborative research and development agreement, Seven Bridges’ hybrid-cloud platform aims to establish an automated execution network to distribute data, metadata and compute jobs across on-premise and remote resources. 

“Some MVP data will always need to be on local infrastructure, while some can be processed remotely for faster and more cost-effective analysis,” VA Program Manager Jennifer Moser said. “Seven Bridges is building the software to link these two environments so that researchers can ask biological questions and perform reproducible and shareable analysis as rapidly as possible.”

The genotype-phenotype graph analysis engine, will provide software and algorithms to synthesize existing genomic data sources and phenotype information into a unified graph data structure.

Lockheed Martin is also contributing to the MVP, securing genomic data storage and providing researchers across the VA, academia and other federal organizations with secure access to genomic and clinical data.
