HPC resources for COVID-19 research
The Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Department of Energy and a number of government, industry and academic partners have launched the COVID-19 High Performance Computing Consortium to ensure researchers have access to HPC resources as they work to better understand the virus and develop treatments and vaccines to help address infections.
The Consortium currently provides access to portions of 16 supercomputing systems at the Argonne, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge and Sandia national labs, NASA, the National Science Foundation, MIT and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute along with IBM and Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft. Additional capacity will be available as new partners sign on.
Across the Consortium, the various systems can support work in modeling and simulation, artificial intelligence, machine and deep learning, data-intensive science, visualization and data analysis to support exploration of the virus’ underlying protein structure, its evolution and mutations, how it may spread and the effectiveness of countermeasures.
Researchers can submit COVID-19-related research proposals to the consortium via an online portal. They will be reviewed and matched with computing resources from one of the HPC partners.
Scientists can also tap into the CORD-19 dataset, a machine-readable collection of over 29,000 peer-reviewed articles that uses AI-powered search to help researchers find relevant studies and machine learning tools to identify connections between papers.
“The Department of Energy’s National Labs have made profound advancements towards combatting COVID-19,” DOE Under Secretary for Science Paul Dabbar said. “By providing researchers access to world leading technology here in our own backyard, we take an additional leap towards ending this pandemic.”
