Microsoft has merged its Office productivity suite directly into its Copilot app, letting users create, edit and collaborate on Word, Excel and PowerPoint files without ever leaving the AI assistant.
The company detailed the feature, called Office in Copilot, in a Tech Community post published this month, describing it as a way to combine document creation with an AI-first workflow.
What changed in the Copilot app
Microsoft said it is bringing the full power of Office into the Copilot app, combining the rich creation and collaboration capabilities of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with an AI-first way of working.
Users can start in either Chat or Cowork to explore an idea or create a first draft, then continue editing and collaborating directly within the same experience.
The company says Office in Copilot allows you to move from an idea to a finished document, spreadsheet, or presentation without losing context – within Office in Copilot or if you switch to the standalone apps.
The update also adds a new Library section inside the Copilot app. That library brings together recent Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, including pages and AI-generated images created in Copilot or standalone Office apps.
From Library you can reopen a file, keep editing it with Copilot, or start a new one.
Part of a broader Copilot overhaul
The Office integration is one piece of a larger relaunch Microsoft announced on September 25. The company introduced what it calls the new Copilot, with three new capabilities: Home, where Chat and Cowork come together, and with Office in Copilot, the full power of Word, Excel and PowerPoint built into the experience.
Code lets everyone build their own solutions with the tools to run them safely, and it’s powered by the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot. Autopilot is a persistent, proactive and personal agent that keeps working even when you’re not.
From the Home screen, you can ask Copilot to draft a launch brief, model a budget, build a deck, or pick up a file your team is already working on, and it creates or updates a real, editable document, workbook or presentation, live for your whole team, not just you.
New tools inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Microsoft also refreshed features within the individual Office apps as part of the rollout.
In PowerPoint, Copilot now keeps decks on-brand automatically and enables fine-tuning of slides and images or quickly applying a custom template.
In Excel, when Copilot or another collaborator makes edits, users can see exactly what changed and why , along with chart recommendations for visualizing data.
Across Microsoft 365, the company is also rolling out Skills and connectors meant to bring specialized expertise directly into daily workflows, including financial analysis in Excel and legal workflows in Word.
For now, access is limited. Office in Copilot is rolling out today for Frontier customers in Chat and Cowork , meaning the feature is reaching an early access group before a wider release.
The company has not said when the capability will expand to all Microsoft 365 subscribers.
Why it matters
The move signals a shift in how Microsoft wants people to think about its productivity tools, positioning the chat-style Copilot app as a starting point for document work rather than a sidebar feature bolted onto Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
It follows years of Microsoft layering Copilot features into individual apps, and comes as rivals push their own AI assistants deeper into everyday software.
The change could also matter for how people manage aging devices and subscriptions, a concern already shaping decisions around whether to replace hardware, much like shoppers weighing a phone’s battery health reading before trading it in or paying for an out of warranty battery swap.
