Google has introduced what it calls an industry-first feature for smartwatches: Breathing Emergency Detection on the new Pixel Watch 5. Powered by multimodal sensors, including PPG, accelerometer, and barometer, alongside on-device AI, the watch continuously monitors for severe, persistent drops in oxygen saturation; if a breathing emergency is detected and the wearer is unresponsive, the watch can automatically call emergency services and transmit the wearer’s exact location. The feature is launching first in Europe. Pre-orders opened August 12, with general availability beginning August 20.

What Breathing Emergency Detection does

The Pixel Watch 5 introduces Gemini Intelligence for proactive, hands-free assistance and debuts Health Guardian tools, including industry-first Breathing Emergency Detection and monthly wellness trend summaries for blood pressure and insulin resistance.

Breathing Emergency Detection joins Loss of Pulse Detection and Fall/Crash Detection under the Pixel Watch’s new “Health Guardian” features umbrella. Google says the feature will launch first in Europe and has not been cleared or evaluated by the U.S. FDA. Google positions the capability as a significant step beyond the fall detection and heart-rate alerts that have become standard across competing smartwatches.

The Pixel Watch 5 has two additional new preventative-health features: a monthly blood pressure trends report and a monthly insulin resistance trends report. No new sensor is involved; the watch uses data from its existing sensors, and a new algorithm analyzes 30 days’ worth of that data to provide an estimate. These form part of the Health Guardian feature set, rounding out what Google describes as its most advanced on-wrist health experience to date.

A new sleep breathing quality metric tracks blood oxygen levels minute-by-minute, while sleep stage tracking is 15% more accurate. The watch also brings Smart Wake Alarms and a revamped Morning Brief. A Strength Training experience with step-by-step guidance is coming through Google Health Coach, alongside custom routine building.

Gemini takes a bigger role on the wrist

Google says it designed the watch to deliver personalized and proactive help right when it’s needed, for example, proactively suggesting relevant actions or information based on a text message’s context.

Users can raise their wrist to ask Gemini a question, handle requests like finding a nearby lunch spot with navigation, or use Gemini offline to manage timers, alarms, and workouts by voice. The watch dynamically surfaces timely updates at the bottom of the watch face, including flight information, ETAs, and other helpful reminders.

The expansion of Gemini to the watch mirrors the broader push Google announced earlier this year, when it added 13 third-party apps to Gemini on Android, letting the assistant handle bookings and media playback across a growing ecosystem of services.

Storage doubles, battery varies by size

Storage doubles from 32GB to 64GB and RAM increases from 2GB to 3GB, a 50% increase. The watch is powered by the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated with a 12% boost in CPU processing power; these upgrades, along with the M55 co-processor, make the device 20% faster. Battery capacity increases from 325mAh to 332mAh on the 41mm model and from 455mAh to 465mAh on the 45mm variant , though Google’s battery estimates remain 30 hours with always-on display on the smaller device and 40 hours on the larger. Color options are Obsidian, Fog, Olive, and Canyon across both sizes; Olive features a Satin Pyrite casing, while Canyon is exclusive to the 41mm model.

The Pixel Watch 5’s GPS also received a significant upgrade. The company’s AI-powered GPS post-processing, which uses 3D building models and atmospheric corrections, is part of the same Made by Google 2026 package. Google claims the result delivers 2x more accurate route mapping in challenging environments.

Pricing and availability

The Pixel Watch 5 starts at $399 for the 41mm version, $50 more than last year’s model, and $429 for the 45mm version, a $30 increase over the previous generation. A Stephen Curry Special Edition retails for $579 and releases on September 3. The main lineup becomes generally available on August 20, 2026.

Google unveiled the Pixel Watch 5 at its Made by Google event on August 12, 2026. The event took place in New York City. The event also unveiled the Pixel 11 series and a competitor to Apple’s AirTag, with Google using the occasion to show off new Gemini-powered features across its devices.
