Over the past few weeks, Cracker Barrel made news headlines due to the plans for changing the logo of the restaurant. There were plans put in place to remove the man who leans over the barrel on the logo, and numerous critics voiced their dissatisfaction about this idea, including the United States President Donald Trump. The company soon decided to stop the plans and to keep the original logo. Now, the restaurant pressed pause on implementing other changes, like a modern makeover.

Story behind this “pause” situation

Locations such as Lebanon, Tennessee-based Cracker Barrel stated on Tuesday that just four of the company’s 660 restaurants had been remodeled. These 660 restaurants were part of a test for the new brand the company had in mind for the restaurant. The process of these remodelled stores began last year. This change that occurred within Cracker Barrel restaurants came with more comfortable seating, brighter lights, lighter paint, and a simplified assortment of antiques. However, the signature elements were kept, such as the fireplaces.

The company made a statement and said the following, “We heard clearly that the modern remodel design does not reflect what you love about Cracker Barrel, Of course, we will continue to invest in our restaurants to make sure that they are in good shape and meet your expectations.”

Details on becoming relevant

On Tuesday, Cracker Barrel stated that the company is suspending the remodeling of its restaurants after receiving criticism from many longtime fans. This specific announcement came just two weeks after Cracker Barrel backtracked on a plan that was set out to modernize and simplify its logo. Many of the restaurant’s consumers and supporters had also loudly criticized that move.

In addition, the chain made an announcement about a transformation plan in May 2024. This was made under the chain’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Julie Felss Masino, who is a former executive at Taco Bell and Starbucks.

Masino stated that Cracker Barrel was losing its relevance in society with so many other strong competitors. She also stated that the company needed some changes to boost customer traffic. In addition to remodeled stores, the company made plans for new dinner menu items and more efficient kitchens.

Modern Makeover Plans Suspended

Masino the CEO, stated that Cracker Barrel is planning to remodel 25 to 30 stores in the company’s 2025 fiscal year, which ended July 31. Masino stated during a conference call with investors that, “Historically, Cracker Barrel has made limited changes to our design aesthetic, and we’ve probably relied a little too much on what was perceived to be the timeless nature of our concept.”

In addition, she stated that the company received several positive customer feedback after the  remodeling of two stores. She further added that the goals were simple, it was to bring a fresh way of the company. This is to ensure it is noticeable and attractive, but that it still feels like Cracker Barrel.

However, many of the changes that were implemented did not sit well with many customers. Especially after Cracker Barrel made an announcement about the plans to simplify its logo and to remove a picture of an overall-clad man leaning on a barrel.

According to Jerry Love “They are supposed to be taking out the old, I call it ‘antique-type’ decorations on the walls.” He said this as he stood outside of a Cracker Barrel in Vicksburg, Mississippi, late last month. The “They” he is referring to in this regard is the company who is supposed to only focus on the decor of the building and not getting rid of the entire brand. He further added that he is extremely conservative and old.
