It will soon be time again to advance your clocks and give yourself the gift of time in the form of an extra hour of daylight come March. Spring forward in time as daylight saving time will soon come into effect — potentially for the last time.

Why do we “spring forward” and when will it happen?

Every March and November plays host to the adjusting of your clocks one hour forward and backwards respectively. During March in most of the United States, everyone will sacrifice an hour of sleep to gain an extra hour of daylight by moving their clocks forward from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. This practice is known as daylight saving time and recently re-elected president, Donald Trump, wants to eliminate it.

This changing of clocks occurs on the second Sunday of March each year and ends on the first Sunday of November. As per the Old Farmer’s Almanac, for 2025, clocks hands will move forward by an hour on Sunday, March 9 at 2 a.m. which will then become 3 a.m.

On the first Sunday in November later this year, the country will re-adjust their clocks to “fall back” one hour. At 2 a.m. on November 2, clocks must be moved back an hour to become 1 a.m. — gaining Americans across the country an extra hour of sleep. So be sure to change to set your clocks appropriately before bed on Saturday, November 1.

What is President Donald Trump’s plan of action for the practice?

The Republican Party’s election to office has been received with greatly differing opinions. As expected, the more conservative masses were all in favor of Trump as president whilst the rest of the nation fears for the country’s future. However, the president appears to plan to use his newly elected power to eventually eliminate the practice of daylight saving time entirely.

In a post made by Donald Trump’s official account on social media platform, X, the president said, “The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation.”

The notion of springing forward and falling back is not particularly enjoyed by people for the most part. If Trump does manage to eradicate it, he could gain the slightest amount of approval from those who were previously opposed to him for whatever reason.

Daylight Saving Time and The Sunshine Act: Will we be springing forward for the last time this March?

There have been several previous attempts to make daylight saving time permanent — the most notable being the Sunshine Act.

In March 2015, U.S. Sen. Ed Markey proposed a bill to end the changing of clocks and make DST permanent throughout the year. The bill would simply negate the need for Americans to change their clocks twice a year, said Markey.

Markey’s reasoning was that, “this head-spinning ritual of falling back and springing forward has gone on long enough, it isn’t just a nuisance — changing our clocks also has a very real impact on our economy, our health, and our happiness.”

The bill passed the senate but can only become law if the president signs off on it. With Trump’s latest claims regarding this issue of time, it appears that there is a real possibility for this bill to pass and become law. For a bill to become a law, it must first be voted on by the House of Representatives. This must then be followed by the president signing it.

If the Sunshine Act is voted on by the House of Representatives and signed into law under President Trump, then March and November of 2025 may just be the eleventh hour for the practice of Daylight Saving Time.
