Starlink is a satellite internet constellation that provides broadband internet access to areas out of traditional network reach. This service is offered by SpaceX, a company founded by Elon Musk.

Recent developments will now allow for certain mobile devices to connect to the satellite internet system — and it will be free of charge.

What is Starlink?

This innovative internet technology makes use of a satellite system, rather than cable technology such as fiber optics, to transmit internet data by means of radio signals across the vacuum of space. This system makes use of satellites in a low orbit constellation. The aim of this system is “a low latency network in space that facilitates edge computing on Earth.”

The idea is to make global coverage a reality, even in rural areas where internet connectivity is scarce or even nonexistent. The satellites orbit at a mere 550 kilometers above the Earth, allowing it to offer lower latency, high-speed connection, revolutionizing the way the internet is accessed by millions globally.

Now, Elon Musk’s satellite constellation will be available on certain mobile phones once July hits. The implementation of Starlink internet on mobile devices opens up new avenues of communication for individuals in areas that have weak cell service, or no nearby cell towers at all. Users with mobile devices that allow for Starlink internet will be able to send text messages, share their locations, and most importantly, contact emergency services if needed — even if they are in an area without regular mobile coverage. The best part? Applicable mobile devices will be connected to the space network free of charge.

As with all innovations, particularly in the tech sphere, there are some limitations and in this case, not all mobile devices will have the capacity to support the satellite internet system. Mobile device type, and the installed software update on the device will both factor in on whether or not a mobile device will support Starlink internet. At present, certain models from Apple, Samsung, Motorola, and Google have the capacity to utilize the satellite internet system.

Applicable makes and models

For Apple, one of the global leaders in tech, the iPhone 14 and all subsequent models — standard units, Pro and Pro Max units included — will have compatibility.

Google’s Pixel 9, along with the Pro, Pro Fold and Pro XL will all have the capacity to connect to the satellite.

A detailed list for Motorola’s model has not yet been released, however, the company has confirmed that it will be integrating the system into all models released from 2024 onwards.

The South Korean mobile conglomerate, Samsung, has also announced that several of its later models will be able to connect to Starlink. Amongst the compatible devices are the Galaxy A14, A15, A16, A35, A53 and A54. Additionally, the X Cover6 Pro and Z Flip3 onwards, and the Z Fold3 and later versions, along with the S21 and all subsequent models — Plus, Ultra and Fan Edition included — will all have the capacity to utilize the satellite system.

How does it work?

Users with compatible mobile devices will not have to do anything special to connect. Once the device is out of range of traditional cell towers and networks, the device will automatically switch its connection to that of Starlink. Users will be able to identify that the network provider has changed and a connection to the satellite has been established through the “T-Mobile SpaceX” sign that will appear on the screen of the device.

Initially, the connection will only allow for the sending and receiving of text messages, location sharing, and calls to emergency services. There is expectations for support to expand and include functions like phone calls and web browsing, thereby further increasing the functionality of this system.
