America’s well-known retailer, Target, has been focused on implementing several changes over the past few months. Recently, the retailer has been issued with a lawsuit from its employees because they are walking long distances to reach their check-in and checkout points. If it was not the “woke” wars the company had to fight against, it was the DEI boycotts. Now the CEO of the retailer identified three pivotal steps to bring joy back to the shopping experience.

The current state of the retailer

In the past few weeks or months, the retailer made headlines for several reasons. One might have thought that Target fell off the K-Mart due to everything that has been going on. In reality, the retailer’s brand has seen a massive decline when it comes to its sales, but it tried to remain profitable.

In addition, the second-quarter numbers of the retailer were either mildly disappointing or mildly encouraging depending on how your perfective. According to the shared in earning release, Target reported second-quarter GAAP and Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.05. This can be compared with the GAAP and Adjusted EPS of $2.57 in 2024. It is evident that there is a significant difference.

Some positive aspects of the retailer:

  • The second-quarter net sales of the retailer were $25.2 billion. This is 0.9% lower than 2024, indicating a nearly 2 percentage point improvement versus the first quarter.
  • The foot traffic and sales of the retailer trends improved significantly compared with the first quarter, particularly in stores activities.
  • Also, all six core merchandising categories experienced comparable sales improvements if it is compared to the first quarter.
  • The digital comparable sales of Target grew by 4.3%. This reflects more than 25% growth in same-day delivery powered by Target Circle 360 and continued growth in Drive Up.
  • The non-merchandise sales grew by 14.2% with Roundel, membership, and marketplace revenues all growing double digits.

The retailer’s challenges

The right-wing and left-wing activists want to take credit for the retailer’s challenges. The left has claimed that boycotts over the retail chain dropping the DEI initiatives have been effective.   According to the NPR’s Alina Selyukh that some people are claiming that the boycotts also encouraged Cornell to announce the fact that he is stepping down as CEO of the company. However, these are just claims and it is not the facts of this situation.

As further stated by Selyukh, the retailer did signal Cornell’s retirement plan a few years ago. It all feeds this bad trend at Target, where sales have been on a continuous decrease or basically flat for almost three years. In addition, the retailer acknowledged the existence of the boycott that occurred. It stated that it was one factor the retailer has struggled, but seeing slight sales declines hardly makes this a Bud Light situation.

The retail chain has also faced right-wing boycotts because of the fact that it is seen as being too woke for supporting Pride Month and offering gender-neutral bathrooms.

Target’s three step plan for effectiveness

Michael Fiddelke, the CEO of Target enters the job with eyes wide open and realising that he needs to take urgent action. He stated that he has established three central priorities that the company should focus on, to reinforce what will continue to set the retailer apart.

He further alluded to the fact that he strongly believes in the company’s differentiated place in retail. He stated that at Target’s core it is a style and design-led company. The retailer is a merchant at heart who love products and win through offering a unique assortment, as Fiddelke stated. Below is the essential three step plan he has proposed:

  • First, the company must reestablish their merchandising authority in a way that is distinctly Target.
  • Second, the company is a retailer that believes that an elevated experience is every bit as important as product. The want consumers to find a sense of joy from every trip to Target, and this should be done more consistently and frequently.
  • And thirdly, the retailer should start to fully use technology to improve their speed, consumer experience, and efficiency throughout the business.
