One of America’s retail giants, Walmart, has been on a streak to implement various changes to its stores. The retailer has now launched a new service with the aim of attracting consumers and catering to loyal shoppers. This new service that the retailer will have available might lead to the end of the local mechanics in communities.

Details behind this change

Walmart announced that the retailer is implementing a convenient new service for car owners. A pilot of this massive store change aims to keep consumers away from the competition. The retail giant implemented various changes over the past few months as a means to sweeten the deal for consumers. These bold changes in the retailer’s stores come amid a nationwide pullback in consumer spending due to concerns about tariffs making goods less affordable.

In addition, during the second quarter of 2025, Walmart quietly introduced 7,400 price rollback discounts. This resulted into 2,000 more than last quarter, although the retailer was faced with higher costs from tariffs. According to the retailer’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Doug McMillon, the company is trying it keep its prices as low as it possibly can.

In June 2025, Walmart also doubled down on convenience by expanding the company’s drone delivery service to five cities across the country: Atlanta, Houston, Charlotte, Tampa and Orlando. Also, earlier this month, the retailer even said it will remove synthetic dyes and an additional 30 ingredients, from the company’s private-label food brands in United States stores. This change was implemented after a survey revealed that most of the retailer’s consumers want more transparency regarding ingredients in food products.

Walmart’s new auto care centres

Now, Walmart is making another massive store change to attract and retain consumers. However, this time around, the retailer is targeting car owners. The retailer is piloting contactless Auto Care Centers in certain stores. According to a press release, these new centers will allow consumers to schedule vehicle service appointments, check in, and track their vehicle’s progress through the Walmart app,

Below are some important points that consumers should keep in mind regarding the process of these now centers. Here’s how it works:

  • Consumers will have to sign into the Walmart app and select “Services.” They can then schedule an auto appointment by clicking “Auto Services.”
  • At the time of the appointment, consumers can park near the Auto Care Center and check in using the app.
  • Consumers can then follow the app’s instructions to unlock their assigned locker, which they will use to drop off their vehicle keys at the Auto Care Center.
  • While their vehicle is being serviced, consumers can receive live updates of its progress through the app and will be notified when it is ready to be collected.

In addition, the first contactless Auto Care Center opened in Fayetteville, Ark., last week. The retailer has plans to open five more of these locations over the next few months in Ohio, Georgia, Texas, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Currently, consumers can only book tire installation appointments through the app. The retailer plans to later expand this feature to battery replacements, oil changes and other car maintenance services.

The retail giant is battling with competitors

The retailer’s shift to contactless Auto Care Centers comes as Walmart has been encountering increased competition from dealerships that have also focused on making their vehicle repair services more convenient for consumers. A survey from a mobile service platform called Curbee revealed last year that dealerships offering mobile vehicle services attract an increased number of consumers to their service departments. This is especially the case when a mechanic services a car at a consumer’s home or office.
