Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

One of America’s retail giants, Walmart, made headlines because of how much the bulk warehouse charges consumers for certain products. Some family members continuously decide to buy products in bulk, but it has been found that the warehouse giant has been overcharging consumers. Now, the retailer is facing another customer complaint.

America’s retail giant

Since food is a necessity and something we all need daily, retailers will always make money. Therefore, the bigger the family, the more supplies a family will need. As a result of this, it would be simpler if families did their shopping at a big supermarket retailer. Another reason for this option is that items tend to be cheaper if you buy in bulk.

In fact, this is something that many people believe, and that is why consumers choose to go to America’s big supermarkets, such as Walmart. The interesting thing is that many consumers are not at all satisfied with what Walmart has to offer.

Walmart is also considered the be the biggest global retailer, focused on servicing more than 37 million customers per day. This has been confirmed by the Business Dasher, and it also stated that the retailer serves more than 255 million customers per week. In addition, the fact that over 57% of customers prefer shopping their groceries at Walmart rather than other marketplaces, the retailer’s grocery sales are the biggest revenue generator for the giant.

Walmart settles consumer lawsuit

The prices of products are extremely important for consumers; however sometimes certain large corporations can make pricing mistakes. In addition, the retailer, Walmart agreed to pay $5.6 million to settle a consumer protection dispute. It has been alleged that the retail behemoth overcharged consumers, by selling products and goods weighing less than what it was labeled for.

In addition, this has been a civil complaint, which was filed by a team of district attorneys’ offices. According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office in California, it was alleged that Walmart illegally charged higher prices than posted on the label of products. As stated by the report, these actions of the retailer are in violation of California’s False Advertising and Unfair Competition Laws.

Walmart runs 280 stores in the Golden State, 10 of these stores are located in Santa Clara County. According to the District Attorney Jeff Rosen, “when someone brings an item to the register to be scanned, the price must be right.” Rosen further alluded to the fact that people expect this to happen, including California. He also added that his office expects and that is why they will apply the law to make sure it happens.

The following a list of aspects that the settlement includes in the court orders:

  • Walmart have to pay $5.5 million in the civil penalties.
  • The retail giant will have to maintain employees who will be responsible for price and weight accuracy across stores in California.
  • The retailer will have to pay $139,908 for the investigation costs.
  • Santa Clara County is set out to receive $1.38 million, with penalties going to the Santa Clara County DA’s Consumer Protection fund.

The retailer’s overcharging mistakes

This was not the first time the retailer was accused of being guilty when it comes to overcharging mistakes. To be in charge of such a large business comes with a lot of challenges. The profits of these big retail giants are usually the biggest drivers. On the other hand, at times several mistakes can occur among retailers of that scope. Also, this new settlement was not the first one Walmart made when it came to the overcharging of product prices. It is, therefore, essential that both consumers and retailers are careful when it comes to situations like these.
