Over the past few months, a massive increase in tariffs has occurred in the United States of America. The main reason for this was based on the number of imports entering the country instead of businesses focusing on selling locally produced products. Companies have been under severe pressure when it comes to these tariff rates because it meant that they had to increase the prices of imported products. Now, there are new tariff rules when it comes to duty-free deliveries.

Surprise charges for international shipments

Some of the United States consumers stated that they have been hit with surprise charges from international shipping carriers. The reason for this is that the exemption on import duties for items under $800 expired as a part of President Donald Trump’s tariff push.

Now, the bills of consumers are sudden and jarring. They are being charged ridiculous prices such as $1,400 for a computer part from Germany, $620 for an aluminium case from Sweden and $1,041 for handbags from Spain. As could be imagined this whole situation is leading to frustration and confusion. Both consumers are the shippers are trying to navigate their way through this new reality. This have a significant impact on consumers who are ordering products from abroad.

Nick Baker, who is the co-lead of the trade and customs practice at Kroll made a statement. The firm where Baker is employed at is a firm that advises freight carriers. In addition, he stated that this entire situation is causing the maximum chaos

The chaos these new tariffs are causing

A businessman, Thomas Andrews, runs a company in upstate New York where they are restoring vintage computers from the 1980s and 1990s. He stated that he was shocked to receive a tariff bill from UPS for an amount of approximately $1,400 on a part worth $750. He further alluded to the fact that the assumed that it might have been just a mistake.  Andrews stated that this is total extortion that is taking place.

Additionally, late Friday, a representative for UPS informed Andrews that the initial charge he received on the part was indeed incorrect. The tariff bill for this computer part should have only been about $110 and not $1,400. However, it was too late to correct the error. At that point, Andrews had already refused shipment to avoid paying the large charge.

Soon after he learned about the corrected charge, Andrew’s realized UPS had already begun sending the product back to Germany. This was the final annoyance; Andrew faces since he was now being charged an extra $50 for the return shipping. According to a statement made by UPS, there are solutions put in place to assist merchants with this new environment. However, the issue with the customer-billing situation was not addresses.

Products affected by imported duties

On August 29, 2025, for the first time in nearly a century, small-dollar items coming into the United States were also called de minimis goods. This means that these products were also charged imported duties. Now, it looks like even small, personal orders now face the sizable tariffs placed on United States trading partners.

However, a current ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit found many of President Donald Trump’s duties unconstitutional. Meanwhile, these duties remain activity in effect while Trump appeals the case to the Supreme Court.

Baker stated that many foreign businesses that specifically rely on United States consumers now encounter this dilemma of high tariff costs. Also, this is assuming that they are properly accounting for it in the first place, or even just passing it on to their own customers, which could scare off business.
